Polo is a team sport played on horseback with the aim to score against your opponent. The player controls a wooden or plastic ball (size 3 to 3.5 inches) using a long paddle called a mallet. 1937 marked the start of the history of polo in Indonesia, while Batavia Polo Club was founded in Banteng Square, Jakarta. The association founder is a Dutchman and the first game he did was against the Malaysian polo team. In the event of World War II and the Japanese colonized Indonesia, the association disbanded.
In 1992, Hashim S. and James T. Riady Djojohadikusomo re-introduce polo in Indonesia by establishing JPEC – Jakarta Polo and Equestrian Club – in Bukit Sentul South. In the same year, Indonesia became a member of FIP – Federation of International Polo – with Hashim Djojohadikusomo as Chairman of Indonesian Polo Association.
Under the guidance of Subiyakto Chakra Wardaya as president of the Equestrian Sports Association of Indonesia (Pordasi), the Association of Indonesian Polo Polo Indonesia became the Commission under Pordasi with permanent chairman Hashim Djojohadikusomo. Because of the busyness of the chairman of doing business abroad, the development of polo in Indonesia actually stopped in 2002.
In 2005, under the guidance of Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Prabowo, founded Nusantara Polo Club. These clubs represent Indonesia for the first time in the Kings Cup 2006 tournament in Thailand and ranks third behind Malaysia and Jordan. In the final of this tournament, ASEAN countries: Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia agreed to make polo as an official sport that is played in the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand.
